Indoor Air Quality Testing: When Should Your Workplace Be Assessed?

Indoor air quality testing can help identify problems that are not always visible. The right assessment examines the building, its occupants’ concerns and the conditions affecting the air—not simply a single test result.

People spend much of their time indoors, yet the condition of the air inside a building is often considered only after occupants begin reporting discomfort, odours or respiratory concerns.

Indoor air quality can be affected by moisture, mould, inadequate ventilation, dust, chemicals, outdoor pollutants and building materials. The source is not always obvious, and different problems can produce similar symptoms. A structured assessment is therefore more useful than beginning with a predetermined conclusion.

When should a building be assessed?

An indoor air quality assessment should be considered when:

  • occupants report recurring irritation, coughing, headaches or respiratory discomfort while inside the building;
  • symptoms appear to improve after leaving;
  • there is a persistent musty or unusual odour;
  • mould or water damage is visible;
  • the building has experienced flooding, plumbing leaks or roof failure;
  • rooms feel unusually humid, poorly ventilated or uncomfortable;
  • concerns develop after construction, renovation or the installation of new materials; or
  • an employer, property manager or homeowner needs evidence before deciding what action to take.

Symptoms alone cannot establish their cause. Where health concerns exist, affected individuals should seek medical advice. The building assessment serves a different but complementary purpose: identifying environmental conditions that may require attention.

Testing is one part of the assessment

Indoor air quality testing should not be treated as a stand-alone exercise. A useful assessment begins with the building itself.

That may include reviewing the history of the concern, inspecting affected areas, looking for moisture intrusion and examining ventilation, humidity and other relevant conditions. Sampling or measurements can then be selected according to what the inspection reveals.

This approach is consistent with guidance from the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which uses building observations, occupant information and environmental measurements when investigating workplace health concerns. NIOSH’s Health Hazard Evaluation programme reflects the importance of examining the wider context rather than relying on one isolated result.

Mould requires careful investigation

Mould needs moisture to grow. Its presence may indicate a leak, condensation, excessive humidity or another unresolved building condition. Removing visible mould without addressing the moisture source can allow the problem to return.

The World Health Organization’s guidance on dampness and mould associates persistent dampness and microbial growth with increased respiratory symptoms, allergies and asthma.

Testing must also be used appropriately. The US Environmental Protection Agency notes that visible mould does not normally require sampling merely to prove that mould exists. However, professional assessment and targeted sampling can be valuable when the extent or identity of the mould is uncertain, hidden growth is suspected, or evidence is needed to guide remediation.

Why this matters in Jamaica

Indoor air quality is a recognised local concern. A National Environment and Planning Agency report identifies mould as a biological indoor-air contaminant and notes that indoor pollution affects Jamaican businesses, industrial facilities and homes.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has also documented the practical consequences of poor indoor conditions. Environmental testing at Cornwall Regional Hospital identified high humidity and mould growth as major contributors to the facility’s air-quality problems. These examples reinforce a simple point: indoor air concerns require evidence that can lead to action.
